Madeline Singas’ appointment to the state’s highest court has created a vacancy for Nassau County district attorney. The Daily News urges Nassau voters to elect Todd Kaminsky, a former state and federal prosecutor who is now a standout state senator. Tough on crime and corruption and with a history of good judgment, Kaminksy earns our strong endorsement.
After a decade of prosecuting domestic violence, street crime, drug trafficking and government corruption for the Queens DA and the Brooklyn U.S. attorney (where he never lost a case), Kaminsky ran for the Assembly. In his first month in office, the freshman led his fellow Democrats to acknowledge that Preet Bharara’s criminal charges against Speaker Shelly Silver were incredibly solid and damaging.
Kaminsky then passed more legislation than any other freshman ever — and before his term was up, bested the once-fearsome Nassau GOP machine by winning the Senate seat held by Majority Leader Dean Skelos until his conviction by the feds.
Sen. Kaminsky has been a voice of reason in a Democratic conference that sometimes loses its bearings, such as with bail reform. He argued against the 2019 sweeping wholesale changes, which were rammed through without listening to the DAs. In 2020, when the reforms were scaled back, he was on point again, arguing that judges should have discretion (as in almost all states and the federal system) to order defendants held pre-trial to protect the community. Sadly, his counsel was not taken.
Here, his GOP opponent, Anne Donnelly, flat-out lies in accusing Kaminsky of being the father of bail reform. Wrong; Kaminsky helped fix the mess. Likewise, when Albany legalized marijuana this year, Kaminsky made sure that driving while stoned would be a crime no less serious than being boozed up.
There’s not much else to say about Donnelly, a prosecutor who has vanished into the GOP’s candidate protection program, ducking debates and the press. Dishonesty and disappearance are bad habits for someone vying to be DA. Vote for Kaminsky.
